EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts point out that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
