In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
