Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the ability to question certain rulings from the official, following the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
